Nina & Yusef

How We Met

Yusef and I had a mutual friend who was celebrating their birthday, so I went to the party with my sister and a male friend. Yusef mistakenly assumed my male friend was my boyfriend, which led to us not speaking at all during the party. Afterward, we all decided to head to a local bar in Buffalo, Falley Allen, where Yusef and I ended up sitting on opposite sides of the table.

At some point, Yusef popped open a bottle of champagne, and when the cork flew across the room, it ended up hitting me. He quickly looked around to figure out where the cork had gone, then saw that it had struck me. Embarrassed, he came over to apologize. In a playful moment, I jokingly told him that the cork had hit me in the eye (which, of course, it hadn’t—LOL), and Yusef, trying to make it right, promised to make it up to me.

The following day, Yusef was hosting an event at his store in Buffalo, The Cellar, so I decided to stop by. There, he gave me a generous discount on a pair of shoes as his way of apologizing. That was the icebreaker we needed.

That same night, there was another event at Vice, a restaurant in Buffalo, and neither of us knew the other would be there. Yusef spotted me from across the room, came over without hesitation, and offered to buy me a drink. That sparked a real conversation between us. We ended up sitting at the bar, talking for hours and completely losing track of time. From that moment, things just clicked. And, as they say, the rest is history.

In you, I’ve found the love of my life and my closest, truest friend.

The Proposal Story

From Nina!

April 28th, 2023, marked the day of my medical school graduation—a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. But the day before, something happened that would make the entire weekend even more special. We were at my parents' house, sitting together and talking with my dad when I got up to go into the kitchen. I left Yusef and my father in the living room, unaware that a pivotal moment was unfolding behind me.

When I returned to the living room a few minutes later, I immediately felt like I had walked in on something I wasn’t supposed to see. My dad was grinning from ear to ear, clearly trying to keep in a secret, he said, "This young man has a question for your mother. Please go get her."

As soon as he said that, I knew exactly where this was going, so I quickly excused myself from the conversation.

The next day, my graduation was everything I had hoped for—an emotional, beautiful day surrounded by the people I loved most to celebrate my biggest achievement. After the ceremony, we had an award dinner with family and a few classmates. It was a moment to celebrate all the hard work and dedication that had gotten me to this point. But little did I know, Yusef had one more surprise in store.

After dinner, I was escorted into a side room. As I walked in, I saw my entire family gathered on either side, with Yusef standing in front of a large sign that read, “Marry Me.” My heart stopped, and in that moment, everything felt surreal. It wasn’t just the joy of graduation; it was the overwhelming love I felt from Yusef, my family, and the life we were about to build together.

It was a perfect, magical moment—one that made my graduation not just the end of one chapter, but the beginning of another. An unforgettable day in every way.

From Yusef!

April 28th, 2023

That date is etched into my heart forever, but not just because it was Nina’s medical school graduation—a day that celebrated years of her hard work, resilience, and brilliance. It’s because, on that same day, I took the most nerve-wracking, exciting, and monumental leap of my life.

It all started the day before, when I worked up the courage to sit down with her parents. I was sweating like I’d just run a marathon—my palms clammy, my voice wavering. When she left the room to grab something from the kitchen, I knew it was now or never. Her dad’s grin when I asked for his blessing could have lit up the whole room, but his teasing comment, “This young man has a question for your mother,” nearly sent my heart into overdrive. As her mom entered, the nerves doubled. But the love and warmth in their response made every second worth it.

Graduation day arrived, and while Nina was glowing with pride and excitement, I was quietly spiraling. Watching her walk across that stage, I was overwhelmed with admiration - and a side order of sweaty palms. By the time we got to the Buffalo Club for her celebratory dinner, I knew I needed something to take the edge off. A couple of shots later, my nerves were starting to ease - until I realized I was this close to getting tipsy. Getting lit wasn’t the answer for what I was about to do!

When the moment finally came, I felt like my heart was trying to escape my chest. As we walked into the side room, where her family was lined up and a big sign reading “Marry Me” stood in front of us, time seemed to slow down. Her face—equal parts shock, joy, and love—made all my fears vanish. I barely remember what I said, but I do remember the way she looked at me when she said yes.

That day wasn’t just about her incredible achievement, though that alone was monumental. It was about the life we were about to build together, the partnership we were cementing, and the love we shared. Her graduation was a celebration of her hard work, and the proposal was a celebration of our future.

Looking back, I still laugh at how nervous I was, how sweaty my hands got, and how close I came to overindulging at dinner. But I wouldn’t change a thing—because that day, I got to honor the woman I love in every possible way. It was the end of one chapter for her and the beginning of a whole new book for us.
